The Real Cost of a .si Domain: Registration and Renewal

A .si domain is not simply “€10 forever.” Separate the registry tariff from retail pricing, then check renewal, tax, currency, transfer terms and optional services before you buy.

A .si domain may look inexpensive at registration, but the first-year number is not the whole bill. The recurring renewal, tax treatment, currency, transfer terms and optional services determine what a founder actually budgets. As observed on 6 October 2026, OVHcloud’s Ireland storefront listed €14.99 excluding VAT for registration and €14.29 excluding VAT for renewal, while Domenca displayed €13.99 for the first year. Register.si’s published €10 figure applied to the registrar tariff rather than directly to customers.

The short answer: budget beyond year one

How much does a .si domain really cost after the first year? Budget for the registrar’s standard renewal price, not just the promotional registration price, then add any applicable tax or currency costs. On 6 October 2026, OVHcloud’s Ireland storefront showed €14.99 excluding VAT for first-year registration and €14.29 excluding VAT for each renewal year. Domenca displayed €13.99 for the first year, but its accessible page did not expose a verified renewal price.

These are dated storefront observations, not permanent market prices. The observation date is 6 October 2026; it is separate from a retailer’s publication or page-update date, which was not independently verified here. A displayed price is also not necessarily the final cart total until the registrar applies the billing country, tax treatment and payment terms.

Why the registry’s €10 is not your checkout price

Register.si’s published tariff lists registration or renewal at €10 per year excluding VAT. That is the fee in the registry-to-registrar layer, not a promise that every customer can buy a .si domain for €10. Register.si says the tariff is intended for registrars and that ARNES does not control the prices registrars charge domain holders.

Retail pricing can reflect the registrar’s support, operating costs, payment processing, regional storefront, promotion and bundled services. Compare like with like: VAT-inclusive with VAT-inclusive, renewal with renewal, and a dated quote with another dated quote. The registry tariff is a useful baseline, but it is not a universal retail price.

First year versus renewal: use the two-year test

A practical comparison is the cost of keeping the domain for two or three years. Add the first-year registration price to one renewal for a two-year illustration, then add another renewal for a three-year illustration. Using the observed OVHcloud Ireland figures, the two-year pre-VAT illustration is €14.99 + €14.29, or €29.28, assuming the displayed prices remain unchanged. That is a calculation based on one dated storefront, not a forecast or fixed future price.

Register.si’s current general terms allow registration or renewal periods of one to five years. A renewal creates a new registration period beginning on the same day in the month as the original registration. If the registry receives no renewal request, the domain enters quarantine on its expiry date; quarantine may last no longer than 30 days before deletion. The registrar may have separate notification, restoration or recovery procedures, so check its own terms as well.

Transfer: a €0 fee is not a free extra year

Does transferring a .si domain add another year? Do not assume it does. Register.si states that changing registrar does not alter the registration period. It also says that transferring a domain to a new holder does not alter the period. The ordinary tariff lists both change of registrar and transfer to a third party at €0.

There is a narrow registry exception: the tariff lists a €2 excluding VAT transfer charge under clause 9.3, which concerns a registrar-failure scenario. That is different from the ordinary €0 change-of-registrar and third-party-transfer entries. OVHcloud’s Ireland page lists transfer at €0 excluding VAT and says automatic renewal is not included. Before moving a domain, check the receiving registrar’s terms for the expiry date, transfer conditions, renewal setting and recovery charges.

VAT, currency and optional services

The final checkout can differ by region. OVHcloud’s Ireland storefront displays prices excluding VAT and states that VAT can vary with the customer’s residence. Use the storefront, currency and billing country that actually apply to your purchase, rather than converting a foreign promotion and assuming it is your price.

At checkout, confirm whether tax is included, which billing country is being applied, whether the charge is in euros or another currency, and whether your card or payment provider adds a conversion fee. Do not compare Domenca’s displayed VAT-inclusive price directly with OVHcloud’s ex-VAT price without accounting for that difference. Domenca’s page states that its prices include 22% VAT unless otherwise marked and may reflect the current promotion.

The domain may also come with, or be sold alongside, other products. OVHcloud lists starter email, DNSSEC protection and 100 MB of hosting with its .si offering. Domenca advertises a free website, email mailbox and DNS hosting. These are registrar-specific bundles, not universal .si entitlements. Register.si separately lists registry lock at €20 excluding VAT, a security transaction rather than ordinary registration or renewal.

Other possible budget lines depend on the registrar and the name: paid hosting, extra mailboxes, DNS or security products, restoration, and—where offered or applicable—premium pricing or late-recovery charges. The cited sources do not establish that privacy protection, premium pricing or late-renewal fees are universal .si costs. Check the provider’s current terms rather than assuming they apply.

The practical checklist is simple: record the first-year registration price; find the standard renewal price; confirm whether a transfer changes the expiry date; check VAT and currency; look for restoration or late-recovery terms; separate hosting, email, DNS and security products; and save the date of the quote. That is the real cost of a .si domain—not necessarily the lowest number in a promotional banner.

A few good questions.

Is the registry’s €10 price what customers pay?

No. The €10 annual figure is Register.si’s published registrar tariff excluding VAT, published on 5 December 2022 and valid from 1 January 2023. Registrars set the customer-facing price and may apply their own tax treatment, promotions and service bundles.

How much does a .si domain cost after the first year?

Use the registrar’s standard renewal price, not the first-year registration price. On 6 October 2026, OVHcloud Ireland displayed €14.29 excluding VAT per renewal year. Other registrars and regions may differ, and Domenca’s accessible page did not verify a renewal price.

Does transferring a .si domain add a year?

No automatic extra year should be assumed. Register.si’s general terms say that changing registrar and transferring the domain to a new holder do not alter the registration period. OVHcloud lists transfer at €0 excluding VAT but says automatic renewal is not included.

Why can the final checkout price differ from the advertised price?

VAT treatment, billing location, displayed currency, payment-provider conversion charges, promotions and registrar pricing can all affect the total. Some pages show prices excluding VAT, while others display VAT-inclusive amounts.

What optional costs should founders budget for?

Consider hosting, email, DNS or DNSSEC products, registry lock or other security services, restoration and any registrar-specific premium or late-recovery charges. Do not assume privacy, premium or late-renewal fees apply universally; check the chosen provider’s current terms.
