INTRODUCTION

1. Opening a Limited Company in Malta

Opening a Limited Company in Malta offers businesses several advantages, from its EU membership to its low corporate tax rates. To establish a company, you need at least one director and one shareholder, with a minimum share capital of €1,165. Registration is straightforward via the Malta Business Registry (MBR). Key benefits include Malta’s tax refund system, access to EU markets, and double taxation treaties. Additional requirements include drafting the Memorandum and Articles of Association, registering for VAT, and obtaining a registered office address in Malta.

2. Malta Tax Benefits

Malta offers an attractive tax system with significant advantages for businesses and individuals. Corporate tax rates are effectively reduced to as low as 5% due to Malta’s full imputation tax system and tax refund mechanisms for foreign shareholders. Additionally, Malta has over 70 double taxation treaties that protect investors from being taxed twice on the same income. For personal income, the tax rates for expatriates and highly qualified individuals are also favorable, particularly through the Global Residence Programme and the Highly Qualified Persons Scheme.

3. What is Beneficial Ownership?

Beneficial ownership refers to the individual or entity that ultimately controls or benefits from an asset, even if it is held under another name. In legal structures like trusts or corporations, the beneficial owner is the person who enjoys the rights to the income or assets, even though the legal title is in someone else’s name. For transparency, many countries, including Malta, require companies to disclose their beneficial owners to prevent financial crime and enhance corporate transparency.

4. Benefits for Foreign Investors in Malta

Foreign investors in Malta enjoy a range of benefits, including low corporate taxes, access to the EU single market, and a favorable regulatory environment. Malta’s strong financial services sector, flexible residency schemes, and tax incentives for holding companies make it a preferred destination for international businesses. Foreigners also benefit from Malta’s skilled workforce, English-speaking business environment, and comprehensive double taxation treaties that protect international earnings.

5. Why Malta is Perfect for the Gaming and Casino Industry

Malta is a global hub for the online gaming and casino industry due to its progressive regulatory framework, low tax regime, and high-quality infrastructure. The Malta Gaming Authority (MGA) offers a robust licensing framework that ensures fair play, security, and player protection. Additionally, Malta’s strategic location in Europe, tech-savvy workforce, and favorable business climate make it ideal for gaming companies seeking to operate in a competitive, well-regulated environment.

6. Sigma Malta Event

Sigma Malta is one of the world’s premier iGaming events, bringing together operators, affiliates, regulators, and solution providers in the gaming industry. Held annually, Sigma Malta showcases the latest innovations in online gaming, blockchain, and digital marketing. The event also offers networking opportunities, panel discussions, and exhibitions, making it a must-attend for businesses and investors looking to expand in the iGaming space.
